2 Chicks with Scents on holistic solutions
In the six years it’s been in business, Wilmington’s 2 Chicks with Scents has gained a loyal following, and with good reason. The business sells hand-crafted holistic products that provide relief from a variety of issues.
While 2 Chicks with Scents’ hallmark product continues to be its hand-poured, aromatic soy candles, it also sells organic salves, balms, and body butters; therapeutic grade essential oils and blends; and bug sprays. It even has a salve for pets.
“We want to help people realize the benefits of essential oils and that big pharma isn’t always the best way to go,” says BITSY CRAWFORD, (left) who co-owns 2 Chicks with Scents with her friend KARA RIDER (right). “There are other options that are better for you.”
Crawford’s struggle with rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia was the impetus for the business. To relieve her symptoms, Crawford began researching essential oils, then branched off into making candles and body products.
Rider started helping Crawford make small batches of candles, soaps, and salves. Crawford and Rider then shared their products with friends and family, who were amazed at how beneficial they were and urged the two friends to sell them.
2 Chicks with Scents steadily garnered new fans, and Crawford and Rider continued to develop new products. Some were their own invention, and others came about from requests to deal with a specific issue such as dry, chapped feet or headaches.
If none of their products fit a customer’s needs, Crawford and Rider can develop a custom blend for her or him—a practice they continue today. All a customer has to do is give Crawford or Rider a list of symptoms.
Several of 2 Scents with Chicks’ products, such as its soothing candles, anxiety roller blend, and CBD products, have become perennial favorites. That is due to the fact that they, like all 2 Chicks with Scents products, deliver results, they say.
“A lot of customers like the transparency, being able to tell what is in products and that they are ecologically sourced,” says Rider.
2 Chicks with Scents products are sold in their studio, online, and in local gift shops such as Madame Meerkat’s Cabinet of Curiosities, The Bryand Gallery, Delilah’s Brew and Chew, and LunaBelle Gift Shop & Gallery. Before the shutdown, Crawford and Rider also held candle making workshops, and sold their products at farmers markets and festivals locally and throughout the Southeast.
Crawford and Rider are taking several measures to withstand the economic downturn. For example, all online customers receive a 20% discount on their order. 2 Chicks with Scents also delivers orders to local customers. When restrictions are lifted, Crawford and Rider will resume their in-store sales, workshops for groups of 10 or less and will again sell their products at festivals and farmers markets.
“We’re asking our supporters to stay patient and shop small and local,” says Rider. “We want to keep going and impact the planet in a good way. We want to make it easy for people to have healthier alternatives.”
