Joining a board of directors is a powerful way to achieve three impactful goals: building leadership skills, expanding your network, and giving back to the community. WILMA Leadership’s Get on Board program, in collaboration with UNCW’s Quality Enhancement for Nonprofit Organizations (QENO), is designed to help more women in our region step into these rewarding roles and make a difference.

The Get on Board seminar provides an overview of nonprofit governance and capacity building. The following topics will be covered to help participants serve as effective board members:

• The role and legal obligations of a board of directors  
• How to find a service opportunity that matches your skills and interests  
• Questions every potential board member needs to ask before agreeing to join 
• Professional and personal benefits to being a board member

Participants will also be introduced to the Governance-Leadership-Management (GLM) framework, QENO’s innovative approach to organizational development. Currently in use by numerous local nonprofits, the framework offers an alternative to outdated models of strategic planning. This seminar will demonstrate how GLM helps an organization’s leaders develop a practice-based approach to continual strategic thinking.
