WILMA’s Leadership Institute: Meet Bernice Sanders Johnson

WILMA’s 2025 Leadership Institute, an annual nine-month program, gives area women the opportunity to learn from leaders in the region, visit a range of local companies, and serve as each others’ personal board of directors.

The program is part of the WILMA Leadership Initiative, created to help develop more women leaders in our area.

Meet institute member BERNICE SANDERS JOHNSON.

Current job responsibilities: Performs Engineering Plan Review to ensure adherence to Standards and Specifications, Develop and manage engineering processes and procedures, Manage, train, mentor, and evaluate engineering staff, Implement process improvements to increase efficiency with the Development Services team, Ensured compliance with engineering standards and best practices on all projects, Identified areas of improvement and implemented necessary changes to streamline processes and improve efficiency, Manages external consulting engineers in the design of capital projects, monitors performance and resolves issues related to project schedules, change orders and/or work delays, Develops draft scope of work and bid documents; administers the engineering consultant contracts to include reviewing and issuing correspondence, transmittals, and contract payments and amendments; negotiates with engineering consultants regarding fees and recommends corrective actions for contract deficiencies, Makes recommendations on the proposed designs issued by consultants to ensure compliance with project specifications, intent, safety regulations, budgeting and scheduling constraints, Provides supporting data and expertise for communication and public relations activities regarding capital projects, groundbreakings and construction progress, Prepares and administers requests for proposals to consulting engineers, architects and construction firms for services related to the design and construction of capital projects, Developed a RFI process between Engineering and Customer Service to better answer customer questions which increased customer satisfaction and improved the efficiency of customer service.

Hobbies: Volunteering, working with various organizations including the Azalea Festival, Junior League, Beta Sigma Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., and the Wilmington, NC Chapter Jack and Jill of America, Inc.
