WILMA’s Leadership Institute: Meet Abby Lorenzo

Snapshot of this year's Leadership Institute members

WILMA’s 2024 Leadership Institute, an annual nine-month program, gives area women the opportunity to learn from leaders in the region, visit a range of local companies, and serve as each others’ personal board of directors.

The program is part of WILMA’s Women to Watch Leadership Initiative, created to help develop more women leaders in our area.

Meet institute member ABBY LORENZO.

Abby Lorenzo

31Title: Deputy Director

Company: Wilmington Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (WMPO)

How long have you been with your current employer? 6.5 Years

Alma Mater: Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Vermont in 2011. Master’s in Public Administration from the University of North Carolina Wilmington in 2022.

Prior career experience: I worked for a Maine-based private engineering consultant firm for 2.5 years, gaining experience in traffic impact analysis development, traffic signal timing, highway design, and site design. After relocating to North Carolina I was a Planning Technician in Carolina Beach for 3 years where duties included zoning review for new development permits and floodplain management.

Current job responsibilities: The WMPO is the federally designated and funded regional transportation planning organization, tasked with conducting regional transportation planning through a continuing, cooperative, and comprehensive process. The organization has regional plan development requirements, as well as assists in local transportation planning efforts with member jurisdictions. My day-to-day responsibilities include organizational and project management; overseeing and ensuring transportation planning activities are being completed to meet the federal requirements; assisting the Executive Director in the implementation of the WMPO’s Strategic Business Plan; and monitoring current, and contributing in the forecasting of future, fiscal resources.

Hobbies: I’m a mother to three soccer loving kids and enjoy attending their games and tournaments. I also love the travel, read, and most importantly spend time with my husband and children.
