Ideas for going all out while staying in

Work is done, recipes have been tried, cleaning has been achieved, and yet there are more days ahead to be at home.

Chances are you’ve been stuck at home working remotely and doing the right thing by socially distancing yourself. The weekend is around the corner and more couch lounging seems to be the plan. However, there are some innovative ideas to maintain you and your family sane and active this weekend, a way of going all out while staying mostly in.

Color Your State

Wilmington NC in Color is a coloring book showcasing important African Americans and landmarks in Wilmington’s history. The book was developed by Support the Port to help educate school children about Wilmington’s African American heritage while at the same time, engaging in fun coloring activities.

While the book is available for $10, Support the Port has decided to release parts of the educational book for free while kids are out of school and parents are looking for ways to keep them entertained.

“School is closed but we believe that learning never stops. We will be here for you in these hard times,” an email from Support the Port states. “Wilmington is strong and we will continue our work to Support the Port.”

Pages can be downloaded here and here to be printed and colored throughout the weekend.

While the pages are free, donations to Support the Port are strongly encouraged. Those can be made online here.

Free Online Fitness Classes

Online workouts on YouTube and other platforms are great for staying active while indoors but following a workout live makes it feel like you are actually part of a class at your local gym.

The Sherriedale Morgan Fitness Center and Halyburton Park are offering some of its normally scheduled fitness classes on Facebook Live for free, allowing people to participate in a class safe at home.

Class options are as follow:

Yoga Classes
Mondays & Wednesday 8 am
Tuesdays & Thursdays 6:30 am
Wednesday 6:30 pm
Thursday 5:15 pm
Saturday 10 am

Wednesdays 5:30 pm

Boot Camp
Tuesdays 4:15 pm

To participate go to the Going Fit page on during the scheduled time. If you can’t “attend” class, the videos will be saved on the page and to view and follow along anytime.

Play RUNGO (and maybe win a prize)

One way to exercise while actually going outside but maintaining a safe distance is to play RUNGO. Fleet Feet is launching a fit version of Bingo for people to follow along and possibly win a pair of shoes.

Participants who complete one row (horizontal, vertical, or diagonal) will be entered to win one of three prizes.

Participants who complete the whole game (all the squares) will be entered to win the grand prize. The game ends on April 19. Participants should join the Fleet Feet Wilmington RUNGO group on Facebook.

Activities include running or walking for 60 minutes, dancing, running in the rain, stretching, taking a selfie on a bridge, and more.

Virtual Concert

Many concerts, unfortunately, have been canceled due to the coronavirus. If you are tired of your go-to Spotify playlist, some artist are performing live through viral concerts. From Hozier to the Metropolitan Opera to the Honey Badgers, NPR has gathered a list of concerts by date that can be found here.
