Erika Merriman on co-founding Oasis

In 2011, ERIKA MERRIMAN co-founded Oasis, a school dedicated to students with autism. As the school’s executive director, Merriman helps create an environment in which the students – who are in grades K-8 – feel they belong, where they are accepted, and where they make progress toward academic and social goals. “We really love our students and see a lot of potential in all of them,” Merriman says.
WHAT KEEPS YOU INSPIRED?
“Definitely the kids! Is there anything better than helping a child make their first friend? Or to be invited to their first birthday party? I don’t think so!”
HOW DO YOU JUGGLE ALL YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES: THE SCHOOL, A NEW BABY, ETC.?
“It is much harder than I thought it would be. My goal is to stay in the moment as much as possible. When I am at school, I focus 100 percent on that. When I am home, I put my phone on silent and enjoy my family. Some days, I feel like I am not doing well at either, but I try to be compassionate towards myself and know that I am trying the best I can.”
WHAT COMMUNITY NEED HAVE YOU FOUND SURPRISING?
“We have found the biggest need is in the area of the health and education of our children.”
WHAT ELSE ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT AND WHY?
“I am very passionate about advocating for animals and eating a plant-based diet. I think it’s important to stand up for those without a voice, especially those experiencing cruelty and abuse. Enjoying healthy food is a great side effect of that belief.”
WHAT DO YOU DO TO RELAX AND UNWIND?
“I really enjoy going to the beach and yoga. They are both great ways to recover from a busy day or week.”
HOW DO YOU FIND THE COURAGE TO TAKE RISKS?
“I have very supportive family and friends that encourage me to keep going when I am feeling doubtful. I am very grateful for them!”
