Haute Décor

It doesn’t always seem as if fashion and home décor would tie in together, but occasionally, the two can become surprising bedfellows. In some respects, the two fields parallel one another in inspiring ways this year. These trends inspired a home and closet makeover, the former of which was carried out in a Clayton Homes property in Wilmington. The trends of the moment were incorporated in the builder’s Charleston model home, demonstrating that home and style can artfully join forces.

Midcentury modern designs along with lustrous gold accents bode well with the local popularity of vintage frocks and gold-embossed accessories. 1960s gold GOWN ($125), available at The Wonder Shop; EARRINGS and BRACELET (stylist’s own)

This year, there are tons of home design trends to choose from. Locally, the varying shades of blue continue to be popular, while gold accents, midcentury modern themes, and bold textures continue to inspire local interior designers.

Infusing the latest décor trends in what was originally a neutrally designed model property was as easy as changing the accessories and draperies.

Interior designers KENT LOFTHUS of BLUE HAND HOME and PAMELA BAYER of PAMELA BAYER INTERIORS offer tips on how you can do the same for your home.

“The best way to incorporate blue is in the accessories. You can use blue in accent pillows, draperies, even artwork,” says Lofthus, adding that the shade of blue is also important to consider.

“We’re seeing darker blues in 2015, but living by the coast, people like the soft blues.”

“If you don’t have the space to do wallpaper, draperies can take the place of that. You can add more texture with cowhide rug on the floor or with textures in the pillows on the sofa,” Lofthus says.

Small trellis END TABLE ($130), Albion SOFA ($2,325), lattice PILLOWS ($90 each), and large trellis END TABLE ($180), all available at Blue Hand Home; embroidered medallion pillow

“Midcentury furniture can be either reproductions or antiques, but if you’re not buying new furniture, you can try accent pillows with popular midcentury prints or era-inspired décor,” Bayer says.

Blue, yellow, and brown accents Bayer says the trends this year are all about the color.

“Taupe and grey are the wall colors, and the accent colors are browns, blacks, yellows, and blues,” she says. “Blue is a huge color, but use it sparingly.”

“Adding gold to table lamps or chandeliers or other decor have always added not only a needed accent but just enough bling to make a neutral space pop,” Bayer says.

Small gold STARBURST ($44), available at Blue Hand Home

Kensington round TABLE ($1,348) and Cake Paper PLACEMATES ($24.95), both available at Blue Hand Home; North Satin FLATWARE ($2.95 each), Rion DINNER PLATE ($5.48 each), Rion SALAD PLATE ($4.48 each), Rion BOWL ($4.48 each), foiled marble napkin RING ($3.95 each), golden floral print NAPKINS ($3.68 each), and hammered TUMBLERS ($9 each), all available at Pier 1 Imports
