Building Community with Salty Dawg

Happy Family With Dog

The countdown is on as we approach the grand opening of Salty Dawg Pet Salon + Bakery on Masonboro Loop Road next month. Opening Salty Dawg is about much more than starting a business  it’s about creating a space that brings people together around a shared love of animals. While we’ll offer high-quality grooming services, my vision extends beyond the salon. I want Salty Dawg to be a hub for pet owner education, adoption events, and support for local rescue organizations.

My passion for animal welfare began long before Salty Dawg. Since 2001, I’ve worked with animal rescue organizations across the East Coast, but some of my most meaningful experiences came from volunteering for – and eventually running – AniMall Pet Adoption and Outreach Center in Cary. From 2008 to 2020, we partnered with more than 30 rescue groups and helped thousands of animals find loving homes.

AniMall was more than a pet supply store. Customers certainly came in for food and supplies, but they also stopped by to visit Merlin, our beloved store cat, or to spend time with the bunnies and cats available for adoption. Community members would attend adoption events simply because they enjoyed being around the dogs. AniMall became something more than a pet store – it became a community center surrounded by a menagerie of adoptable animals.

I see an opportunity to create that same sense of connection here in Wilmington, with Salty Dawg as the hub. Our goal is to connect pet owners with trusted information and expert resources while also providing visibility and support for local shelters and rescue organizations.

Education will be a major part of that mission. We plan to offer free seminars on topics such as skin and coat health and partner with specialists to bring unique programs to the community, like the Pet First Aid and CPR course we sponsored in June. We’re also excited to introduce experiences that help strengthen the bond between pets and their people, including animal reiki, doggie hiking excursions, and even “pet storytelling” events through our network of partners.

And, of course, rescue work will remain at the heart of what we do. We look forward to hosting events that support local rescue organizations, promote adoption, and strengthen relationships throughout the pet community.

So yes, Salty Dawg is a grooming business. But I’m excited to build it beyond a bottom line and into a community of folks who love their dogs, want to learn how to care for them better, and believe in supporting our local organizations to ultimately create a true place of connection.
