Comedian Erin Foley visits ILM

Comedian, actress, and writer ERIN FOLEY will perform at the Dead Crow Comedy Room February 20-21.

Foley is a regular cast member on TruTV’s How To Be a Grown Up and recently finished writing for the NBC sitcom One Big Happy, which debuts March 17.

Foley has been featured as a comedian on Comedy Central Presents, Conan O’Brien’s late-night show, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, and Chelsea Lately, among other shows. Her acting credits include a guest appearance on NBC’s Go On and a supporting role in Almost Famous.

WILMA caught up with Foley to talk with her about her career and her upcoming visit.

It seems like your career is pretty diversified with your writing, comedy, and acting. What is your favorite aspect of your career?

EF: I think it’s being able to attempt to do everything. It feels fun and creative when you get to perform and write … In the arts you have to have several different jobs to keep yourself afloat, so this came out of necessity. I don’t have a background in theater. It was just sort of happenstance that I got in to acting. I just love that I have the opportunity to do a couple different creative outlets, so I feel very lucky.

What do you think about the role of women in comedy today, and what do you think the future holds for female comics?

EF: Well, I could probably talk about this subject for seven hours. People always ask me when they find out I’m gay, they say ‘Oh, is it hard being gay and doing stand-up on the road?’ and I say, ‘No it’s not.’ What’s hard is being a woman.

It feels like the 1950s out there for women in stand-up. There’s probably only about ten of us headlining, and it’s just really skewed … I don’t know if it’s getting better. It’s getting better in a way where there are more and more women doing stand-up, which is fantastic, and there are more improvisers.

You currently host a very successful podcast, Sports Without Balls, which was recently added to the All Things Comedy network. What made you want to start a podcast?

EF: I thought, well, I could talk about sports. It was something I was already interested in anyway. There’s not enough females talking about sports, so I wanted the show to be me talking to other women about sports … It has been an absolute labor of love. It’s really all I want to do: talk about sports and laugh.

What person, place or thing are you currently obsessed with right now and why?

EF: Well, I feel like I should probably give a smart answer, but I will give you two answers.

The one horrible answer is The Bachelor just started, and, well, I go pretty deep. I have a bunch of friends over, and it takes about four hours to get through it because we are laughing so hard. That’s probably the horrible answer.

The fairly more intelligent answer is the NBA League Pass because I’ve been obsessed for a long time with Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors.

So, why do you think people should come out to see your show at the Dead Crow Comedy Room this month?

EF: Well, let’s see. If you’re bored, if you like to laugh, if you’re unemployed, because life is short, because you should see something live which is the greatest form of any entertainment, because it will probably be cold – and there will probably be heat at the club.

Any one of those, really, I think is a good reason.
