Purses for a Cause

Think about a connection you’ve made to another woman, whether that be complimenting her shoes or exchanging recipes. The reality is, heart disease is the number one killer of women age twenty and over, killing about one woman every sixty seconds.

You could know someone with that same fate, as Lynda Stanley, president of Dosher Memorial Foundation, says.

“You probably know someone suffering from heart disease, stroke, or other cardiovascular disease,” she says in a news relese. “Most of us do. To help these people  – and to help protect our loved ones – we all need to get involved.”

From 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. February 5 at the Southport Community Building, Dosher Memorial Hospital Foundation houses its first event to raise awareness for women’s heart health and introduce women to the foundation. The donations further the advancement and research of Dosher Memorial Hospital’s cardiac rehabilitation department, and participants at the event will learn the signs and symptoms of heart disease.

Both individuals and businesses are banning together, auctioning purses off for the cause. The idea is to give each purse a “pursonality" by filling it with a certain style, a type of entertainment, and relaxation materials (i.e. spa treatments) and other items that reflect character and style. The keynote speaker, Sonya Barnes, is also an image consultant who aims to match women’s healthy bodies with a healthy confidence.

As February is Heart Disease Awareness month, it proves a fitting time for Dosher to participate in its own heart disease awareness campaign. A lot of areas have a ‘Go-Red,’ but Stanley says the group wanted to reach a new market in Brunswick County.
