Jai Undercoffer honors daughter with store and community space
At One-Stop Mood Shop, you can find one-of-a-kind clothing or home decor, take an exhilarating exercise class, or attend an open-mic night — all within one unique space.
Last October, JAI and BEAU UNDERCOFFER opened One-Stop Mood Shop, located at 16th and Market streets, as a “one-stop destination for fitness, fashion, and funky finds.”
One-Stop Mood Shop carries an eclectic collection of clothing, art, and home decor that is outside of the mainstream. Much of their home decor and jewelry is handmade by artists. Undercoffer describes the inventory’s aesthetic as “quirky, fun, and evolving.”
Well-lit, airy, and adorned with vibrant art and stained-glass windows, One-Stop Mood Shop is designed to be a cheerful place, Undercoffer says. The store “appeals to people looking for a good vibe when they shop,” she says. “When you enter the door, your mood is elevated, and you feel like you belong.”
Undercoffer also teaches BodyJoy fitness classes right in the middle of the store’s space. BodyJoy is a one-hour fitness class that brings together dance cardio, strength training, and yoga-based stretching.
As a certified instructor with more than twenty years’ experience, Undercoffer tailors the class to all fitness levels. “It’s a fun class, a dopamine boost, and an intense workout,” she says. She offers the class five times a week, including mornings, evenings, and weekends. Undercoffer requires preregistration to help plan for the classes, which require preparation of the space.
While One-Stop is a business rooted in joy, its mission stems from profound personal tragedy. In 2019, the Undercoffers’ fourteen-year-old daughter Scout died in a car accident in the Raleigh area where the family lived at the time. Scout was a fiercely creative artist with a strong sense of equality and justice. Scout’s empathy led her to befriend children who were lonely and struggled to be accepted by their peers. After her death, countless children came forward to tell the Undercoffers how Scout’s friendship had made them feel less alone.
Inspired by Scout’s memory, the mission of One-Stop is to “live our lives the way she did – out loud, in color, fearlessly, and unapologetically … and to help others do the same,” according to their website.
With a professional sound system and a versatile space, One-Stop Mood Shop also hosts community events such as open mic nights and musical performances. Undercoffer says they are open to hosting creative classes in the future, too. They plan to host “regular events to give voice to the local community and be a positive resource for people,” she says.
This spring, One-Stop will open an outdoor patio space decorated with murals as an extension of the store as a community outlet. Undercoffer describes One-Stop as a space “pulsing with life, energy, people, and vibes. It’s a place for people to come together.”
In the short time since the store’s opening, Undercoffer says One-Stop has already developed a repeat customer base. “I would love for the rest of Wilmington to know we are here and trying to make a platform for people to feel seen.”
