Easy Tips for Limiting Arthritis Symptoms

It’s no accident that Arthritis Awareness Month coincides with Older Americans Month, as this complex disease has a disproportionate impact on seniors. A little over 20 percent of the population in the US has arthritis, and of that number, approximately 55 percent are over 75 years old.

Anecdotal evidence would support the idea that the number is much higher, as it is not uncommon to hear complaints about the symptoms, especially when the weather turns colder. This is more than just speculation, as the science suggests that colder weather can exacerbate the symptoms of arthritis.

Joint fluid thickens as the temperature drops, leading to a decreased range of mobility and more stiffness. Conversely, science shows that things tend to expand in warmer conditions and shrink in colder conditions. Warmer weather may equal less pain, so it is not surprising we have seen a rise in population growth here. Symptoms of arthritis can include joint stiffness, bone spurs, a decreased range of mobility, and difficulty initiating movement.

Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in the US and, considering its adverse, disproportionate impact on older Americans, it is easy to conclude that it is partially caused by age. Genetics play a role as well. Studies show if one of your parents or siblings has it, the risk of developing the condition is higher.

Fortunately, there are a number of steps one can take to decrease the symptoms of arthritis. Exercising on a regular basis, limiting the consumption of certain foods and maintaining a healthy weight are just a few examples.

It may come as no surprise that some of the things that taste the best are also the cause of worsening symptoms in those who suffer from arthritis. Processed foods, pre-packaged meals, red meat, cheese, fried foods, alcohol and sugar, synthetic or otherwise, are some examples of things to limit or consume in moderation, if at all.

Foods that are recognized as antioxidants and/or have anti-inflammatory properties can decrease the negative impacts of arthritis. Fruits and vegetables can help, so things like smoothies and salads are a great choice.

There are a variety of medications and treatments available to reduce the symptoms associated with arthritis. Some treatments can slow the impact and some can reduce inflammation. Other options could include replacing or fusing a joint, blocking pain receptors, or injecting joint fluid.
