Sell-out crowd greets Rhiannon Giddens
RHIANNON GIDDENS stopped in Wilmington ONCE again for a performance this fall in front of 1,000 at University of North Carolina Wilmington’s Kenan Auditorium.
It came after Giddens earned the Pulitzer Prize for music earlier this year for Omar, Giddens’ first opera, which she co-composed with Michael Abels. The Grammy Award winner and MacArthur “Genius Grant” recipient has visited the Port City before, performing “Songs of 1898” at the Cucalorus Festival five years ago.
“Giddens’ performance was nothing short of a masterpiece,” Jeremy Summers, senior managing director of UNCW Office of the Arts, says about the September show. “Her award-winning talent and charismatic stage presence captivated the audience, leaving a sold-out crowd in awe. It was a true privilege to host such a phenomenal artist on campus.”
