Looking Out

Amy Eutsey, Veterinarian

The Fix a Friend Spay and Neuter Clinic in Winnabow benefits from months of organization and funding by Adopt an Angel as well as mentoring from the Humane Alliance in Asheville.

The clinic recruited Eutsey to take the lead role at a time when she was toying with the idea of taking her small-animal practice in a different direction.

“The more I talked to the Adopt an Angel board members, the more interested I became,” she says.

As required by state law, she is the veterinarian owner of record.

Adopt an Angel, which formed to try and reduce animal euthanasia rates in the area, stays connected to the clinic. But its day-to-day operation is up to Eutsey and three assistants.

They offer spay and neuter services at greatly reduced prices, fix hernias, and give vaccinations at the time of neutering.

Animals from rescue groups are given feline leukemia and heartworm treatments. Microchips are offered to any animal, and Eutsey recommends these for all pets, especially for pit bulls because they’re not typically held in animal control for long.

Clinic business has been brisk and comes from as far away as Jacksonville and South Carolina.

“We certainly strive every day to do the best job we can for every animal that comes in here,” Eutsey says.

She’s had three Labradors in the past and loves dogs, but Eutsey says she believes she may have been a cat in a past life.

A busy mom, she says cats fit this stage of her life better than dogs.

“If I had to pick one animal to have,” she says.

“I don’t think I could live without a cat.”
