LIVING HISTORY: Battle of Forks Road and the Fight for Freedom @ Cameron Art Museum
Feb 29 @ 11:00 am – 2:00 pm
LIVING HISTORY: Battle of Forks Road and the Fight for Freedom @ Cameron Art Museum | Wilmington | North Carolina | United States

Celebrate Black History month at Cameron Art Museum with a day celebrating and exploring the role of the United States Colored Troops (USCT) at the Battle of Forks Road and in the Cape Region. Explore history with USCT re-enactors from Tryon Palace and Battery B (11:00 am – 2:00 pm) on the museum’s grounds. USCT re-enactors will demonstrate Civil War-era soldier camp conditions, allowing visitors to see first-hand what it was like to be a USCT soldier.

At 1:00 pm, Civil War historian Chris Fonvielle will do a presentation and sign copies of his new book (available in the Museum Shop) focusing on the USCT at Forks Road, “Glory at Wilmington: The Battle of Forks Road”. “The Battle of Forks Road,” a locally produced film by Adam Alphin and Heather Wilson will also screen throughout the day.

CAM’s grounds were the site of the Battle of Forks Road, a Civil War skirmish whose victory was won by the USCT. Many of the 1600 African-American soldiers who fought at Forks Road were native to this area, and after the war, many of them stayed to settle, raise their families, establish educational opportunities, and build a thriving merchant class. Their impact is significant, yet their story is virtually unknown.

During the programming, Clell Hamm and his family will present their special gift of a bronze Lincoln portrait sculpture to the museum.

Later this year, the Battle of Forks Road will come to life in a full-size bronze sculpture that honors the Wilmington United States Colored Troops. There will be several opportunities during the day to learn more about the unique story of the USCT. Please join us.

Free and open to the public.
